Book Launch

Public Sculpture of Bristol’ a major new work by Douglas Merritt and Francis Greenacre is soon to be published with the support of The Friends.  This is the definitive catalogue of all street sculpture in Bristol covering 800 years, illustrated with 4oo photographs.  A special invitation to members of  The Friends of Bristol Art Gallery to the Launch of this important book in the Rear Hall of the Museum on 19 January was included in the November issue of the Bulletin.  See News for more details.

Day Excursion to Port Eliot, Cornwall

Port Eliot, the family home of the Earl and Countess of St. Germans, is an ancient, hidden gem set in stunning grounds on the banks of a secret estuary.  The present house was designed by Sir John Soane on the site of a former monastery, the park by Humphrey Repton, and has been the home of the Eliot family for 445 years.  .

This proved to be a very popular excursion, with the coach filling very quickly.  A second coach has been laid on, travelling to Port Eliot on Thursday 31 March (see below)

Day Excursion to Cardiff

Since our last visit to Cardiff, some of the Art Gallery’s greatest Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings from the Davies sisters’ collection have returned from the United States and are at the heart of major new displays exploring the origins of art from the mid-nineteenth century to the Second World War.  The visit will be preceded by a morning backstage tour of the Wales Millennium Centre.

Jane Pritchard from the V&A will talk to us tonight about ‘Diaghilev and the Golden Age of the Ballets Russes’

Co-curator of the exhibition by the same name, Jane is also curator of Dance for the V&A.  Previously an archivist for Ballet Rambert and English National Ballet, she created the contemporary Dance archive.  She is chair of the Society for Dance Research.
